For a motorist, we used to hope that the Democrats would retain the
U.S. Senate. While some Democrats deserve to be trounced out of
office (e.g., Milkuski) and some Republicans should be kept there,
the leadership in the Senate made the Democrats more acceptable to
motorists’ rights.
If the Republicans were to regain the Senate, Liz Dole’s husband would
be majority leader, John Danforth would chair Science, Commerce, and
Transportation, and John Chafee would chair Environment and Public
Works. The Democratic combination of George Mitchell, Ernest Hollings,
and Quentin Burdick was much friendlier to the prospect of repealing
bad laws or stopping bad bills before they became law.
However, the death of Quentin Burdick Sept. 8 puts Dan Moynihan, no
friend of ours, in line to chair Environment and Public Works. If the
Democrats retain the Senate, he chairs that committee and has control
over highway bills and safety projects. Yet if the Republicans win
John Chafee chairs that committee. We’re in deep trouble.
Since it’s doubtful that the Libertarians will win any seats, now what
do we do?

Vote for Democrats because then there will still be a favorable majority in the
group. Just because Moynihan is the chairman doesn’t mean he has SUPREME
control. And, there is a lot better chance Moynihan will come around than
Chafee.

i don’t know anything about Chafee, but i can speak up for Moynihan;
even if you don’t agree with his politics, he is an intelligent, thinking
human being with an open mind. there are far worse senators in the
US (one of them is even from New York.)
