Every stop light i’ve ever seen has a yellow plenty long for the driver to
get thru the intersection before the light turns red or else to stop.
Trouble is there are all these psychopathic drivers who see a light turn
yellow when they are still 10 car lengths from the intersection and think
they have some sort of "right" to get thru even though they could easily
stop. Then they are caught by an RLC and whine about how unfair the system
is.
Red light runners kill and maim kids every day and belong in prison.

Their time is very valuable and shaving seconds off their travel time is
very important–more important than you or me or the family in the
minivan who is legally proceeding through a green light.
Hopefully their dangerous driving will eliminate them from the gene pool
before they have a chance to reproduce.

I take it you’ve never been ass-ended while stopped at a red light.
Start observing the society; it will convince you that all residents
of this God-forsaken planet, including the politicians, belong in
prison.
Because one such stoplight camera ticketed a driver in a POLICE-
ESCORTED funeral procession in nearby Greensboro, North Carolina.
Stoplight cameras can’t distinguish between drivers obeying police
officers and ordinary red light runners – as that case shows.

I guess you can’t navigate this newsgroup a few threads down, where
this thread covers the Lubbock city’s engineer own statement about
light timing in proposing RLC…
"Earlier this month, the station cited the rule-of-thumb that Lubbock
City Engineer Jere Hart asserted as the basis for timing lights at
city intersections. At most of the proposed camera intersections, Hart
did not follow his own rule.
At 82nd and University, the 50 MPH speed limit suggests the need for a
5 second yellow, but it currently set at just 4.3 seconds. At 82nd and
Frankford, the speed of traffic requires 4.5 seconds of yellow, but
the public is only given 4.0. Milwaukee and 19th, a 55 MPH
intersection, has a 4.4 second yellow when it should be 5.5. Parkway
and Zenith has a 2.9 second yellow which is illegal under federal
regulations mandating yellow times of no less than 3.0 seconds. Hart
admitted the light should be 3.5 seconds.
Last year, before the news investigation, Hart assured city council
members that he would not increase yellow times. "
So your premise as to yellow lights always being long enough duration,
is, as usual, completely invalid to begin with.
What a surprise! :P

Now that’s a way to roll in the dough… have a cop direct traffic and
let the RLC snap away.

Damn right. They are killers and maimers and along with speeders and drunk
drivers the worst and commonest criminals in america. But idiot americans

Yes i read that thread and that’s what prompted me to start this one.
Hell, 3 seconds is plenty of time to either stop or get thru before the
light turns red.

At what speed?
(this is a test. Be sure to include reaction time and a reasonable
assumption for deceleration in your answer, and show your work.)

Are there really federal regulations mandating yellow light times? I
live in Foster City, CA where there is a green light that changes to
yellow and then red so fast it has completely cycled before I even got
to the other side of the road (I’m not kidding). I’m a young driver,
so I’m not one of those people who sit there for 30 seconds in front
of a green light before I start to hit the accelerator. When that
light hits green, I go! And about half way across the intersection it
turns yellow, and by the time I hit the other side, it turns red.
All this occurs when there is little traffic. Where I live is actually
very modern as there are underground sensors that detect whether cars
are waiting in the intersection or not. The reason I assume for the
short light times on my side is to expedite traffic on all directions.

Moron, people don’t have a zero second reaction time.
The real question is what do you have against a yellow light that is 5
seconds?

RLCs have even been known to ticket cops. It’s not a matter of
legalizing everything but simply making the enforcement reasonable. A
cop with radar and a good set of eyes is much more reasonable than a
send-all-humans-to-prison-damn-quickly camera system.

This incoherent thinking shows exactly why you, SADDAM, are unfit to
offer traffic engineering advice at any level, but instead are much
more suited to become a new addition to the Body Worlds exhibits…

There are plenty of intersections where you attempt to roll through the
green light that turns *instantly* to yellow and then red. You are
trying to time things to avoid stopping and the idiots who program the
lights think it’s funny to give you half second greens. So people are
provoked to the run the lights. It’s too bad but maybe you could
question the people who set the system up a bit more.

The simple solution would be not to force drivers to stop at every

They do if they’re paying attention. Trouble is nuts like you driving thru
busy downtowns while yakking on a cellphone. Then a light turns yellow and
you don’t see it till 3 seconds later and then a second later it changes to
red and then you’re screaming about the stupid stoplights!!! URAMORON

Logically, if eating a sandwich is prohibited than so also should be smoking a
cigarette or taking a sip of a drink. Fiddling with the car audio must surely
come close too.
I strongly dislike legislation being hijacked for purposes that weren’t the
original intent.

This thread is about whatever we in the r.a.d cabal (tinc) say it is
about. And BTW, *you* are *not* a member of the cabal (tinc).

Yes indeed. Drinking and smoking should also be banned. And letting people
have radios and CDs in their car is total insanity. Drivers have been
brainswashed into thinking that driving should be fun and to hell with
safety.
