Re: fog light boneheads confusing people

Sheesh.  Hard to believe I’m actually agreeing with Elias.

It’s true.  Lighting up something that’s 20 feet in front of the car just
a little brighter won’t add any safety.  It’s too late!  You should be
looking much further away than the lights light up in dry conditions.

The reason that they exist is for conditions where it’s *foggy*, visibility
is severely limited.  In these cases, you should be driving so as to not
OUTDRIVE your lights … the foglights will help in these cases, but you
still have to drive very slowly, which is why lighting things up close to
the car may be a benefit.

In other words, if you have your foglights on in dry conditions, unless
you’re going less than, oh, 20MPH, you will be outdriving them, in which
case they are totally useless.  By the time they let you see something,
it will have gone by.

So just don’t turn them on at all.

Me, I keep the covers on my foglights 99% of the time.  I haven’t actually
used them in over a year!  The conditions just don’t warrant it.

Steve, Steve, Steve.  What is this crap??  No four-letter words?  Don’t you
know that to post in alt.flame, you MUST use at least one four-letter word

    Consider this a warning.

    |Another name for "Fog" lights:  Cornering lights —  get it ?

cornering lights are completely different beasties, Vaso.
they are lights on the *side* of the car.  your "use" of fog lights
to aid cornering vision is silly and unnecessary.  if you want
cornering lights, get them.  or why not set your neato fog lights to light
only when you have your turn signal on, in the true Caddy tradition?

    |There is nothing wrong with using *well adjusted* downward angled cornering
    |lights in non-foggy conditions.

sure there is, Mr. Bovan !

    -  impairs the vision of other drivers.
    –  it’s 100% useless to have fog lights on if it isn’t dark out.

and most of all, Vaso, driving with fog lights in conditions that don’t
warrant them makes you look like a HAT-WEARING bonehead.  sort of like the
kind of driver who drives for 800 freeway miles with a turn signal on.
except that you have your fog lights lit *on purpose*.  this makes you
a malicious, hatwearing, boneheaded helium-breathing nudnik driver.

    | Cornering
    |lights add an extra margin of safety in the dark, especially on narrow, twisty
    |roads, and freeway ramps.

if you light em up when other cars are around, and there are no nasty
weather conditions, then you are undoubtedly a fog light bonehead.
just live with it, Vaso!  you enjoy your fog lights immensely, so
why not enjoy the boneheadedness that it brings out in you?

    |Re legality, I was stopped once in California for
    |having cornering lights on. When I protested, the sergeant back at the station
    |confirmed that California law with regards to such lights mentions only
    |misadjustment, height above roadway, and a ban on a highbeam/cornering light
    |combo (which I disagree with).

of course you disagree, candlepower breath!

    |The officer allowed me to go on my way, sans
    |ticket, but I did get the cornering lights adjusted even further down.  Can
    |someone post current California law ?

yes.  the hatwearing foglight bonehead have been nominated to be
    the California State Insect.

    |I also use cornering lights during the day, in the European style. (Canada will
    |soon also require daylight headlight use). Studies have shown daylight use of
    |such lights improves visibility and cuts down on the accident rate.

there’s a valid point after all, Vaso!  but do you really mean
cornering lights???  on the side of your car???  naaaaah — you mean
those NEATO FOGLIGHTS that make your car look so incredibly suavacious!

    |So why aren’t you using your cornering lights, especially during daylight
    |hours ?  Anti-social ?

cornering lights???  look, Vaso, we don’t all drive Delta-88s !  sheesh.

"Fog"/cornering lights have very little to do with forward vision. With well
adjusted cornering lights, there should be the suggestion of a dark band
between the bottom of the low headbeams and the top of the cornering beam. The
main value of cornering beams in non-fog conditions is the light down and to
the side. My experience is that I get better vision, *and* I do not bother/
blind oncoming drivers. Know-nothing drivers who get enraged at the sight of
any fog/cornering lights are best ignored, or avoided like mad dogs. It’s a
matter of common courtesy to keep the cornering lights well adjusted.
Unfortunately, maybe half of all cornering lights are misadjusted, which
    "reflects" even on responsible drivers.

Peripheral vision is useful in its own right, and adds to the total amount
    of correlated driving information.

not quite, Paul.  the vehicle i drive happens to be a favorite of
fog light boneheads everywhere!  many foglight boneheads rewire the
lights so that the foglight can be turned on without the normal
headlights.  this allows them the greatest possible chance to look
like an idiot…  driving around with fog lights on during the daytime!
i wonder if Vaso has rewired his suavacious foglights like this.
