In the San Francisco Bay area, more specifically on I-280, the CHP are
using a silver Mustang for interception, and I have encountered
radar two times from a full-size CHP black and white.

Well as it turns out, last weekend, I saw a new 93 Ford Probe CHP car. No light
bar on top, only a couple of lights in the rear deck and by the front rear view
mirror.
I didn’t expect to find such a recent car as a CHP car.

Do you actually believe that they buy all of their new vehicles? I tend to
doubt it, in this country of declining individual rights and increased
police siezures. All those new cars don’t go to the school districts.

Not to bust your bubble or anything, but the FHP also runs Interceptors.
Some of them have lightbars, generally Federal Airdynecs, and some of them do
not. All the FHP Mustangs I have seen, though, have been fully marked (black
body, tan roof, FHP seal on the door).
I have also heard that FHP is experimenting with mobile Ka radar sets, but I
have no confirmation of that. The FHP was one of the first agencies to run
K band radar.

Well..I’ll just have to go out and get the Best damn radar detector

FYI, Albuquerque city police also use 5.0 LX interceptors (white-on-
white, too) and the New Mexico State Police have a fleet as well.
I’ve also seen interceptors in use in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and
Colorado. ’Tis nothing new.

Not impressed. The APD have been using unmarked Caprice cruisers,
lights hidden in the grille, in *civilian* colors (beige, light blue).
This used to be a nuisance until you realized you could spot them
quickly by their blue plates (for all official vehicles) … so the
city put civilian-color plates on them! Now about the only things that
can tip you off are the CB antenna and the driver’s-side Q-beam spot-
light.
I’ve also seen a civilian-camouflaged Mustang interceptor in town —
baby blue with a white top (looked almost like a softtop), no markings.
It did have the city’s blue plates, however, and all the usual radar
equipment on the dash.

Well, most of the "civilia-colored" Caprices I’ve seen share another
common flaw (I dunno if the ones in your area do or not…)…
They always have the Police/Pickup Truck small round hubcaps on black
wheels. (Often with one or more missing).
The City Of Pittsburgh’s standard fleet is 1985-89 LeSabres/88′s/Bonnevilles
all in the white with two scotchlite blue stripe scheme. All of them
also have the aluminum wheels… which is sharp looking, until they start
mixing and matching styles on the same car(!)
Oh yeah, if you go *too* fast, they’ll send one of hte pure-civilian
silver Regal Grand Nationals after you. They’re quite effective as
speed-trap chasers… but I saw one parked next to an intersection while
the drivewr did traffic-cop duty… a good way to eliminate the under-cover
nature of the car, eh?

Have you actually seen one? From what I had read in the NY Times and
the local rag, New York will be replacing the Mustangs with high-output
Camaros, not Corvettes. I can’t see them spending THAT much money on
chase cars when the state is in such a pitiful financial mess….

Hmm; perhaps a slip of the memory. (Sportish American cars beginning
with "C"…) I’ve seen an artist’s rendering of one, but I don’t
remember off-hand any details that would distinguish a Camaro from a
Corvette in the picture… I’ll post details when I go home and check.

The funniest police-type vehicle I’ve ever seen is a GMC passenger bus
that the NYC transit police have converted into a mobile booking station
for fare beaters. The sight of a big city bus, with light bars (2) and
sirens blaring is enough to give me a badly-needed laugh every time I see
it.

Misc. data point:
I have seen one of the NYS Camaros on the section of I-90
between Albany and
the Mass Pike. I actually thought it was quite nice looking

Wrong place to move! When I was down in Florida on spring break two years
ago, I must of seen 10 COMPLETELY UNMARKED LX 5.0s in Florida…. Luckily,
I was in tons of traffic so I wasn’t doing the 85mph avg. that I’d gone the
rest of the way down!!! These cars weren’t just black or white, either…
I saw one metallic blue and a bright red one too! Very hard to tell they’re
pigs until you get right ontop of them and see the goofy hats! (or the riot
gun on the fence behind the front seat! :^) )
BTW, ‘interceptor’ is just a designation given to higher performance persuit
vehicles… For instance RI has a few RS Camaro interceptors with the B4C
option, which is basically a 1LE with Air… Damn things supposed to do sub-
14s quarter-mile, too! That’s as scary as the Syclone, since the B4C RS will
outhandle and outbrake the Pig-Phoon, and probably outrun it on the highway!

I live in Troy, NY just outside Albany. The state police have at
least 1 IROC car, marked with light bars and the rest of the
NYS bells and whistles, and it is used primarily in speed enforcement
in the I-90 I-87 areas around Albany. It has instant-on K band radar
equipment (probably Kustom KR10 equipment).
I saw the IROC twice on the highways last weekend (July 18-19).Z
The TROY city police have a marked Corvette that was donated/siezed during
a drug raid and converted for law enforement use. It is mostly used for
school demonstrations and as a "show car". I have not seen the Corvette
during City patrols.
