The "Mercedes" name on Penske’s cars was the result of M-B financing only.
The engines were the same Ilmor (UK) design Penske has had all season.  M-B
is sponsoring (i.e. sending money) engine development at Ilmor ans as such,
M-B gets to put their name on it.  Word is there’s minimal tech input from
    Mercedes.

Not even close……..The Engine is a totally different design than what
Penske has been running for the rest of the season.  It IS made by the
same company (IImor) that makes the Regular DOHC V-8 for Penske.  But it
is a single cam, pushrod motor, and it is NOT legal for CART competition.
It was designed to take advantage of the different rules available at Indy
    due to it’s USAC sponsorship.
