Holiday Fee Grab Alert: Atlanta area

This is a reminder to anyone traveling I-75 north of Atlanta to
beware while in Cobb county/Marietta.  The Cobb County fee grabbing
brigade plans another all-out effort.  This brigade typically
writes in the neighborhood of 14,000 tickets from this  ~15 mile stretch
of road over a holiday period.  The fines are steep and if you plan on
contesting it, the courts in Cobb county are set up so TWO appearances
at minimum are necessary.

The affected area is I-75 from the I-285 (perimeter) interchange to the
south to where the speed limit resumes 65 to the north (about 15 miles).
Favorite places for the pigs to sit include a dip in the road between
bridges at exit 114, against the barrier wall in the steep curve
between 113 and 114, between I-285 and the Lockheed exit (112 I think)
and just before the 65 mph speed limit sign to the north.

The pigs almost always root from the left lane.  They are quite fond of
fabricating offences, particularly against out-of-state tags.  They
drive a range of vehicles but Chevy Orcas (caprices), Jeep Cherokees and
other SUVs, motorcycles and one full sized van are the most common.
Most are poorly marked.  Aside from sitting and rooting, another favorite
tactic is to cruise at about 65 mph (prevailing speed) and grab any
car they observe acting different from the rest, particularly if
that car is gaining or pulling away from the pigmobile.  Cobb has two
laser radars and use them in great ticket sweeps.  Typically
one pig will fire from the downstream side of overhead bridges catching
the victim in the rear (rear entry?) while a whole sty of piggies sits
down the road in a feeding frenzy.  Therefore watch those overpasses.

The bars must close at 2:00 am so that is a particularly hazardous
time to be on the road not only from the drunks but also from
the pigs who covy in a feeding frenzy.

If you can avoid Cobb County, please do so.  If you must drive through
Cobb County, please be careful and spend as little money while in
the county as possible.  If you must stop for gas or food, please
let the proprietor know you make every attempt to avoid the county
because of the fee grabbing activities.  And if you change your plans
and do avoid Cobb County, please drop me a note and let me know.
I print ‘em all out, bundle ‘em up and mail them to the county commission
chairman.  I may start sending them to the local paper too.
From my 4th of July alert I got over 30 pieces of mail.  Significant bux
represented there.

BTW, both Six Flags Over Georgia and The Whitewater water park are in
Cobb county.  Avoid these if you can.

Well there goes another method of ducking the consequences of breaking the

You know I knew the 60s were coming back with a vengance with all the wild
patterns, bell bottoms, false eyelashes, activism, and political
correctness, etc.  Has anyone see the use of the word fuzz ?  Actually, that
might be in coming because the return of the 70s hasn’t actually occurred
    yet…

Actually John, Six Flags Over Georgia is in Fulton County off of I-20
probably 8 miles from the Fulton/Cobb county line.  I’m surprised you would
make such an error being from Marietta, GA (in Cobb County).

Being from Florida I’ve been a witness to such fee grabbing activities all
over the state down there during holiday periods.  I’ll bet a lot of people
on the net can attest to such activies in a large amount of state and local
law enforcement agencies throughout the US.  I’ll tell you what…in the
interest of fairness to all why don’t we just boycott everywhere and stay
home this labor day weekend.  That way no one can get caught for speeding
and be forced to resort to some devious scheme for avoiding punishment for
breaking the law.  And we won’t be spending our hard earned money in
counties that don’t do some things just the way we like.  Gosh darn we’ll
    sure show them.

And for the rest of you who don’t have time to boycott the mega conspiricy
of the universe… have a great Labor Day weekend.  Even in Cobb County, GA !

Yep, last time I drove through there I got ticketed for 78 in a 55.
There was another car passing me and I was not speeding. I asked to see
the radar and was told he cleared it to clock the car that was passing me.
So I then asked how come I was getting the ticket and his reply was that I
     had out-of-state tags and would have to just pay the ticket :-{
So I went to court on the way back through at the end of vacation. I
found out that I could plead not guilty and reappear for trial in a month,
or no contest and they would reduce the fine to some less than a paycheck
amount :-{  When I told the judge the officers comments about me being from
out-of-state he just laughed like it was all part of the game :-{ I even had
my bother as a witness- which he questioned. (more on this later)
So I went ahead- had them set a court a date. I left the courtroom and
talked with an assistant just outside about about filing police harrasement
charges. They quickly got a DA (? I guess) to talk with me. When I told him
what happened he also suggested that I just pay the fine and go home. I then
explained to him that I was not going to pay for a crime I did not commit and
that I had a witness to testify on my behalf. He said fine and gave me a stack
of forms to fill out. I furiously sat down and began writing away. About half
way through the guy comes back in and asks if I already had an attorney. Yes
my brother ‘here’ is an attorney and feels we have a strong case :-) His
response was – " can I see those forms ?" He takes them and my ticket and
rips them all to shreds :-) and says something to the effect of "take your
smartass home". So we left pissed off yet laughing all the way :-)
When we got home we wrote letters to the Georgia tourist bureau and the
Cobb County Sheriffs Dept. explaining what happened and why would never be
vacationing in the state of GA. again. The tourist bureau sent me a nice
vacation package full of maps and discount coupons ;-) Go figure ?

You’re not actually going to use the maps and coupons and go back there,
are you?  I’ve been forced to endure Atlanta and its nearby Nazi police
squads (most notably Houston county to the south near Macon and Cobb
county just to the north) for several years because my mother and a good
friend lived there.  Well, Mom left 4 years ago, and my friend just
packed it off to Grad school, so the pigs from hell can count on me
never spending any money in their neck of the woods.

It’s not just that these areas are particularly vigilant in their
attempts to reduce speeding; they deliberately set traps to catch the
innocent and figure that since most are out of state, they’ll just pay
up and leave.  Just ask the above poster, my Mom, or my friend if you
need proof that these guys are crooked, money-grubbing scoundrels.

Ah, i feel better.  Now, does anyone know how to get from Chicago to
Orlando without taking 75 through GA?  And, no; Southwest Airlines is
    not a good answer.

This sort of crap is _mandated_ by the feds.  If the state doesn’t make

You mean the feds mandate that a state must issue a certain number of
tickets?  I thought that the government only mandated that a certain
percentage of drivers comply with the posted speed limits on federally
funded roads.  I can see how tickets can be an indirect consequence of
this.  But I don’t see how sporadic "fee grabs" are more effective than
    consistent, non-discriminatory enforcement.

You’re right and the Einstein from MIT is out in left field.  The
speed limit compliance process is a farce (fortunately).  The states are
allowed to put their compliance sensors anywhere they desire.  They always
put them where traffic is known to be the slowest.  Here in Cobb County,
for instance, they are located just north of the I-285 interchange where
massive traffic backs up every day.  These sensors record a few 10s of
thousands of cars every day going approximately "creep".  Very well balances
out the 90 mph drivers common at other times of the day.

Our einstein seems to lack the concept of scale too.  States such as
Tennessee (at least where the counties haven’t gotten greedy) to the
north, which aren’t trying to exploit the traveler, write "energy
violation" tickets for violations above the federal limit but below the
old state one (75 in the case of Tn.) If the county doesn’t add a
surcharge, the fine for this violation is $5.  We’ll now contrast that
to Cobb County where, according to the local paper, wrote over 14,000
tickets over the 4th of July holiday.  That translates into every available
cop writing tickets just as fast as he/she/it could.  And that is indeed
what is to be observed out on the road.  And we can discuss Cobb’s installation
of a bank-style drive-through window for collecting fines.  Not quite the
Justice of the Peace behind the billboard but almost.

This note is probably too late for travelers this weekend but tuck it
away for future use.  There was an article in Friday’s Atlanta Urnal/
Constipation (which should be passed through your sensationalism filter
before consumption) about how border counties on both sides of the Ga-Fla
and Ga-Ala line are targeting cars with out of state tags for random
stops and searches.  Said one High Sherrif Buford T. Justice, "These
out-of-state-ers are drug runners, just as sure as shootin’."  Another
sherrif commented that he didn’t care WHAT the 4th amendment says until
and unless some judge forces him to stop these random searches.  The
article went on to imply that if the victim was clean, he got a speeding
ticket just to say Thank You.

There is only one way to fight this kind of crap.  Keep your money at
home.  I say that even though a good chunk of my income comes from
tourist dollars.  These people don’t understand anything else.  And when
you keep your money at home, let the elected officials know about it.
If you don’t want to write a paper letter to ‘em, email it to me and
I’ll mail them in a batch.  If you can bypass Cobb County in particular
and Georgia in general, do so.  If you must pass through, spend as
little as you can get by with.  If you are a decision-maker or can
influence one, relocate your business elswhere.  Did you know Georgia
now charges every newcomer $200 per out-of-state car as a "priviledge
tax" the first time it is registered?  This is in addition to the yearly
Ad Valorem tax that runs about $300 a year on a Camry/Maxima-class car.
    Just say NO to Georgia!
