E-IGNITION & IGNITION COILS

I own a 4 cylinder daihatsu and fitted in an InfraLight (Allison) E-ignition
module hooked up to a 40kV ignition coil. It was running fine for up to
about a year. Recently I had problems starting the car in the mornings or
when I have left it for about 4-5 hrs. the tach needle jumps and the engine
hunts. I had:
–       the carb serviced and checked for leaks,
–       checked the vacuum advance,
–       changed my plugs and leads,
–       checked for leaks in the inlet manifold,
–       put in a brand new ignition module,
–       checked the optical trigger,

……..still the same problem. I later had the ignition coil replaced with
my original coil (output of 15 kV, I think?) and it seems to be fine. I
don’t know if any of you out there has had a similar problem???
Thnx

Allison electronic ignition components are not known for longevity or
reliability. They have a bit of a bad reputation for this kind of stuff.

Now you tell me, after I just installed a Crane (same company) in my MGB.
Maybe that’s why they have a lifetime warranty.  (BTW, my tach jumps too.)

I have been using Mallory ignition parts and have found them to be
very reliable.  They make a killer high voltage coil.  Zapped my
friend so badly he pissed his pants.

That’s ancient history.  Those valves disappeared when
fuel gauges became standard in Beetles in (I believe)
    1962.

Don’t know about ’74, but some earlier beetles had a fuel cut-off
under the dash on the passenger side.  They had three positions:
OFF, ON, RESERVE (or ZU, AUF, RES) — good anti-theft device too!

    good luck,

1/4 up isn’t unreasonable, unless the engine is running.  The fuel
pump design on the vw engine can’t maintain fuel presure so this would
happen.  I’d still suspect either a clogged line (cause it’s been
sitting so long) or a bad fuel pump.  Easy to determine…

First, disconnect the coil wire from the coil side, then disconnect
the fuel line from the carb, with a friend turning the ignition
switch so the engine turns over, hold the fuel line in a tin can
or bowl to catch any fuel.  If it’s working it will be pretty
obvious.  If not, I’d try replacing the fuel pump.

If it is working, then you’ve narrowed the problem down to the
carb.  Possibly gummed up from age and needs a dunking/rebuild.
New/rebuilt carbs for the vw are dirt cheap.
