Subject: Choosing a radar detector
Distribution: world
Hello, I need help in picking a radar detector. Basically, I want to know
if there are any brands that stand out as being better than the rest, or
if there are other things that I should look for when picking one.
Also, how common is the Stalker gun these days? I live in Mass, and I’m
wondering if I should spend a little more for that protection. (I think
Seekonk, MA uses it, but I haven’t heard of any more.)
Thanks!

The city of Dallas recently deployed two laser speed guns. Enjoy your
radar detectors while you can!

I tried out several radar detectors not too long ago to see what
seemed to work the best. Any of the high-end detectors have good
sensitivity, so what I was most concerned with suceptability to
falsing in "city" mode, which is how my unit is set most of the time.
To make a long story short, the best one was the "Passport". Last
I heard these could be had for $150, which I think is a heck of a
deal. The other detectors I tried were the Escort DSP and the top-
of-the-line Cobra (can’t remember the model)

Well, I just went through what you are about to go through. To make a long
story a mid sized one, I bought the BEL 936W. This detector picks up X K Ka
and ALSO wideband Ka (that is where stalker and photo radar are used) This un
it is very sensitive and is brand new to the market. Not to sound like a comer
cial, but it has antifalsing circuitry, city/hgwy, volume, mute, and a host of
other features. BEL also makes a model # 966 that protects from radar detector
detectors. I got the unit for 169 bucks from Crutchfield in case you were won
dering. If you want their 800 phone number, let me know by email.

Or else just buy a laser detector when those become available this summer.
An article in Autoweek said that Cincinati Microwave and another company would
be releasing laser detectors this summer. Another company is going to be
producing a radar detector detector detector.
And the escalation continues…..

I’d suggest a review of Car&Drivers April (?) article on laser speed
detection. I wouldn’t get too scared about this technology, yet.

Does anyone have experience with battery operated radar detectors or
radar detectors that use a sensing unit that’s installed in the grille of
the car?

Well lemme see….
I currently own and operate two radar units. One is an Escort mounted above
the rear view mirror and the other is a grill mounted detector with a remote
unit inside the car. Basically they both work very well. They will both give
false alert signals occasionally, but years of use has tuned my ear to
interprate the beeps.
Observations:
1. Escort picks up radar first (probably due to higher mount location)
2. False alarms are picked at different times by each unit
3. Legit alarms are indicated when both units "sing" together.
4. Escort picks up radar from the rear better (again high mounting)
After using multiple radar detection (Red Trans Am : can you blame me?) I would
never think of only using just one unit. The addition data allows the driver to
more accurately asses the situation.
