Is Cadillac’s Northstar just a "cute" name for marketing
puposes or WHAT?
For example, Honda’s VTEC is not just a "cute" name. It
actually means something and DOES something to the engine
valves increasing horse power and mpg.
Cadillac cars with the Northstar engine have improve greatly
in terms of hp and mpg. For instance, when I compared Cadillac’s
4.6 V8 VS BMW 5.0 V12; surprisingly, I found out that BMW had
1 or 2 more HP; but the cadillac was definely a winner in mpg.
SO, WHAT’S THE NORTHSTAR???

The "Northstar System" is a complete powertrain combo; engine,
transmission (or transaxle), etc. The engine is significantly
different from other GM engines.

Well, my girlfriend’s father has a Cadillac Allante
w/ the Northstar (it’s one of the later Allante’s)
and it has 295 hp, snarls nicely when you give
it some gas, and sure seems like a nice motor
to me (I was in the passenger seat, unfortunately).
I have no idea what mpg it gets.

The Allante’ is, in many ways, an Italian Cadillac. They retail
for about $70K and, as such, haven’t been big sellers since
Cadillac buyers can’t figure out what’s good about them. The good
thing about this is that they are fairly rare, to the point that
most people don’t have the wildest idea what you are driving, except
that it is something fabulous (Pininfarina designed the car).
I roared all over in one last night with an insane maniac, in scenes
lifted from the pages of Fear and Loathing. The transversely
mounted engine powers the front wheels giving an annoying amount
of torque-steer. As you note, it is a muscley sounding and acting
car with a lot of power and very reasonable handling for a beast
that size, although ours had some pretty fancy rubber, too.
As for mileage, the computer told me we were averaging 15 mpg in the
city.
Drive one, you’ll be delighted,
Ben

Too bad Cadillac no longer produces them. (I believe ’93 was the last
year).
Wonderful cars. I’d gladly buy one used if I had the money.
