How about your safety. The Prism (probably) has dual airbags and is
significantly bigger than a Metro. Which car would you rather be in in
case of an accident?

Well, I have a '93 Geo Metro (I'll wait for the giggles to subside) and I
have no complaints about the car (except for lack of power, but we all know
that anyway). If you opt for the manual tranny, you'll get closer to 50 or 55
mpg on the highway and low 40's in town (with the A/C on, stop and go, etc.)
I didn't bother test driving the Prizm (well beyond my budget). Insurance on
the Prizm would probably be much better, as many young people (read
"high risk") drive Metros. When I bought my car I was single, male, under 25,
and was paying almost $1700 per year with State Farm. I got married a couple
of weeks ago, and it went down to about $1300 per year (no accidents, or tickets,

Andrew - As I recall, you sent me e-mail about leasing v.buying. There is
an excellent article in the July issue of Automobile about leasing. If I
didn't answer your questions to your satisfaction, don't hesitate to e-mail
me again. Leasing is harder to qualify for, but has its advantages.
Since I am the finance manager in a Chev/Geo store, perhaps I can
offer some advice on the Prizm/Metro question. If the budget is simply very
tight, go for the Metro. Don't expect a big discount. Invoice on the 5 speed
is $7,229 and MSRP is $7,695. There really isn't enough profit in a Metro to
pay the overhead even selling it at sticker. If you are going to be driving
principally around town, the Metro is a great choice.Frankly, I have concerns
about the longevity of that engine if you do a lot of highway driving.
If you can stretch for it, go for the Prizm. It is a sweet car.
GMAC has a finance program that may help you get into a Prizm - it
it is called SmartBuy. It works much like a lease, and it generally will lower
your payments compared to what they would be on a regular purchase. (The lower
payment doesn't ALWAYS happen, depending on some of the variables of the deal,
that's why I said 'generally'.) Ask your salesperson about it - they should be
well versed in it. If they aren
aren't, phone the finance manager and get the details. It is a good program and
will help you get more car for your money.
