You might also want to consider the Yokohama 509 (?) and the
Bridgestone RE-71. It is hard to find good comparison data for
_any_ tire, but these two are consistently high-rated by
people who go to the trouble to post comments in newsgroups.
I have heard that the Yokohama AVS suffers from premature wear.
So far, I’ve been extremely pleased with the wet/dry handling
from my 5000 mile old RE-71s. They are rumored to have a long
life, as well.

In the worst case noted in your original post (23.88" vs 24.2"), you
will throw off your speedometer by a whopping 1.3%! Actually, this
is negligeable and insignificant. Keep the diameter within 1/2"
of stock and you’ll have virtually no affect on performance.
In general, a bigger rim (with lower profile tire), will improve
cornering and heat resistance, but at the expense of a harsher
ride, and with greater risk of rim damage in potholes.
Good luck,
-Richard

How about comparing the DOT tread life numbers on the tires? I know they aren’t
much good for absolute milage, but maybe they can be used for comparison. I
went with Michelin XGTVs on a previous car, versus the D40 Dunlops, because of
the milage rating. The XGTVs were a cheaper alternative to the Eagle Gatorbacks
which were original equipment, and which I had been buying as replacements.
They had a similar milage rating to the Goodyears, and indeed lasted about as
long (20-23K miles or so)
Anybody have any other experience or data on applying these milages ratings?

Yes!
I cannot tell you about prices, or
sizing…But I can tell you about the tires…
I have had MANY different types of tires on my Eagle Talon (Sold it)
And have had all the the brands you metioned…
The Yokohama AVS-Intermedate (?sp?):
Nice tire…Great tread pattern…
Smooth and quiet…Fairly sticky…
No way you’ll get more than 10,000-15,000 miles out of them
Pirelli P-700s:
Very hard ride…At "racing" pressures…
Wears VERY quickly…Never liked ‘em…
Dunlop D40 M2s:
Excellent tire…
Fairly smooth, sticky, and lasting…
Out of the three you mentioned I would take the D40M2s…
But…If I had the option…Based on the tires themselves only…
I would try to find some BF Goodrich Comp T/A VR4s…
You WILL get 30,000 miles out of these…
Overall a better tire than the other three…
Also (If you can find any…I think they were discontinued)…
Look for Nitto NT-250s…
I swear buy them…Better than all of the other 9 sets of tires I had on
my Talon…
Good Luck…
LATER!

a data point for you:
92 GTI 16V
use: commuting (highway), NH backroads (curves), lots of enthusiastic cornering
new: autox (on old tires; new ones coming in)
stock tires: p600′s. seemed ok. loud.
present tires: Dunlop SP-Sport 8000, which I believe are the "next" d40 m2.
Incredible. Much better grip, great in rain (at reasonable speeds, of
course), quiter than p600′s. ****tread life drastically lower than p600′s
in my exp, but I’m willing to pay for that.***
I was almost going to try yoko intermediates, but after talking to lots of
drivers and autocrossers who have used both tires, I’ll stick with the
dunlop’s. reasons:
1 yoko’s apparently wear faster than dunlops, although they might be a bit
gripper.
2. yoko’s much louder.
3. I’ve loved the dunlops, all the VW’s at the autocrosses seem to use them
for street tires, and they’re cheap (at least in my size: 195/50/ZR15:
$120/ea).
This was all IMHO, of course. Hope it helped.

I agree the T/A vr4 is a great tire (my girlfriend’s 87 Integra has them),
but they seem to be suited for a much different market than the other
tires mentioned here.
My SP-8000′s are useless in the snow (which is why I have 4 snow tires on
stell rims for New England winter use), whereas my girlfriend’s T/A’s seem
okay.
But they *seem* to be nothing alike in cornering. Granted, this may be a
poor comparison since they’re on different cars and different sizes (mine;
195/50ZR15. hers: 205/60/ not zr but what? 14).
But there’s one particularly fun 90 degree corner on the way to her
house. My gti loves it. Her integra squeals in protest when you try to
do the same. Again, maybe this isn’t a valid comparison, but that’s just
my $0.02

To the original poster…..
Do not forget the RE-71 by Bridgestone. The AVS and D-40 will not come
close to the RE-71 in the wet. Dry performance is also excellent in the
dry.

I have a set on the NX2000 and they will be trash at 25k miles. I agree
that they are not a snow tire. They suck!! Even with the limit slip dif
in the NX, they could not get any traction. But the D-40′s are magic in
the dry and aren’t bad in the wet. My NX uses 195/55-14 and the only tires
in this size are the dunlops D-40s and SP8000 and the bridestones RE-71.
My wife almost killed me when I told here I had to spend $400 on a set of
tires that only last 25k miles. Aren’t high performance tires GREAT!! :-)

The D40′s are still VERY EASY to get. Tire Rack has a Bunch, and so does
NTW, I imagine that several other places still have quite a stockpile
also.

Rick,
I run 205/55-ZR15 D40 M2s on my SAAB 9000T and I think there great. I
would have preferred to use Yoko A509s (which I use on my other cars,
best bang for the buck short of all out performance tires), but they
didn’t come in that size. I think the D40 are probably a little more
tire than I need, but what a difference over the origina P6s! The D40
M2 are just great in the rain, and dry braking is phenominal. I even
get fairly decent mileage out of them. I’m on my second set, the first
set lasted about 40k, then again I do a lot of highway driving. In
general I think there terrific, but either the D40s or the AVS
Intermediate is probably overkill for a Camry. You might want to
consider the A509s.
Good Luck,
Eric Sterbenz
