4×4 driving

When driving in rain, which mode is better for stopping the vehicle?

2×4 mode with 4 wheel anti-lock, or 2 rear wheel anti-lock.

4×4 mode (I think anti-lock is not possible in 4×4 mode?)

    Jeeps with Quadra-Track have 4-wheel ABS in 4X4 mode; so do GMs
    with SmarTrak (Bravada, Astro/Safari, and I think the 95
    Blazer/Jimmy).  You need that viscous center differential, I think.

    4 wheel drive has NO effect on stopping a car.  Many people get their shiny
    new Jeep GC’s, only to smash the front end on the first snow storm because
    they thought that they were invincible.  4 wheel drive only keeps you moving,
    and will give you more control ONLY when you are on the gas.  When my father
    got his Jeep Cherokee back in 86, he broke a rim the first time it snowed
    because he went speeding down a snow covered street, and when he went to
    turn left, he felt the car start to slide so he instinctivly hit the brakes.
    From this, he then lost all control and smacked into the curb.  If he had hit
    the gas instead of the brake, he probably would have been able to pull the
    car out of slide.

    This past winter, I was driving the Jeep during an ice storm.  I was behind
    someone, and we were both turning left at an intersection.  I was probably
    moving at 5 mph when the person in front stopped to wait for a clearing.  I
    hit my brakes which had no effect.  I quickly threw it into reverse and hit
    the gas.  This saved me from hitting him, and sending him into the intersect-
    tion.  However, doing this on a regular basis would surely kill the tranny.

    In answer to your question, antilock brakes are better than a 4×4 since
    a 4×4 without antilocks is no different than a 2×4 without antilocks.

    I disagree with this.  

    For conventional 4×4, you cannot lock both rear wheels without also
    locking the front wheels. If wheels are turning on one axle, then something
    MUST be turning on the other axle in 4×4 mode. It’s not exactly ABS but
    it’s not the same as 2×4.

    The difference is significant in that it’s hard to develop vehicle rotation
    if you don’t lock the rears. OTOH, there is nothing to prevent you from
    locking all 4 and simply sliding straight ahead. I submit that it’s
    better to shed the ‘spin-out’ characteristic than to retain it.

    ABS is best, 4×4 is helpful, 2×4 RWD is worst.

    BTW, 4×4 mode in simple rain with a ‘part-time 4 wheel drive’ system is
    a bad idea. Very hard on the driveline.

    Wow, I thought I was the only one to ever try this desperate move. Back in
    87 I was driving in a snowstorm and didn’t realize (in time) that the
    vehicle in front of me was stopping to turn left. Knowing I had no escape
    route and was going to hit, I figured "what do I have to lose". I threw
    it in reverse and gunned it. I saw lots of snow being thrown from my
    front tires onto the car in front of me. And lo and behold I stopped! (It
    was a full size Bronco and was in 4wd) Who needs anti-lock brakes! :-)
