Bird sets off Speed Camera

Just now on MythBusters, they had a speed camera set up and had a bird
trainer come in (with a falcon) and they set off the speed camera with
false settings… or at least, the camera was picking up the bird.

They ran the test twice to confirm.

My Speeding Ticket

I was driving from Piazza’s in San Mateo, CA in my (stock) Honda Civic
down HWY 92 (from Hillsdale Blvd) for about 2 or 3 miles when I saw
blue and red flashing lights. I didn’t want to stop on the freeway so
I kept going until I hit Foster City (place of my home). The cop asked
me if I knew how fast I was speeding. I was honest, and said "I don’t
know." He asked me this several times.

The reason I didnt’ know my speed was because I was coming home from
work, feeling very tired. But mostly because I was following another
car in lane two (the granny lane) of a two lane freeway. I was going
with the flow. Why should I be on the lookout for speeding if I’m
going with the flow?

There are lots of freeways around here like the San Mateo-Hayward
Bridge that nobody drives the speed limit on. Plus the stretch of road
I was traveling on (if you have travelled on it before) takes a fairly
steep dive for which your car can accelerate very quickly if you are
not careful.

I asked the cop where he saw me or where he was hiding. He told me he
had been following me from De Anza Blvd. De Anza Blvd was the exit
previous to Hillsdale Blvd. It’s about 1 mile before it. I thought
about it and thought how he could have been following me from De Anza
Blvd when I entered the freeway from Hillsdale Blvd? Also, when I
entered the freeway from Hillsdale Blvd I was going slow. I was going
slow because if you have ever driven this road, you know that it goes
up the hill fairly steeply (which prevents you from accelerating
quickly and then it briefly levels out, and then it joins the freeway,
and then it slopes downward.

By the time my car could have exceeded the maximum speed limit of
55mph I must have been close to a mile from Hillsdale Blvd.

Do I have any kind of case in front of a judge? Or should I just pay
the fine and forget it?

MFFY parking today

I was driving through a parking lot behind a small Ford car when the
driver stopped in front of me for no apparent reason.  It basically
parked in the middle of the lane to block traffic, leaving the car in
gear with the brake applied.  After a minute or so, I was about to go
around the obstruction when I noticed someone pulling out of a nearby
space, so I waited for him to back out.  That’s when the MFFY tried to
pull into the same spot.  I didn’t understand this, because there were
about 50 empty spots at less than 30 seconds of walking distance away.
Why did the MFFY need that spot?  It obviously wasn’t to save a few
seconds of walking time, considering that it wasted several minutes of
time and petrol to wait for that parking spot.

Corvette gears

I went for a ride in a friend’s 86 Corvette the other day, and it had
a weird gear system. It was a manual shifter with only 4 gears so
I commented that it was strange that such a powerfur car would
only be a 4 speed, then he said that you can apply Overdrive to
three of the four gears, for a total of 7. How does this work
mechanically?

New highway photos from Missouri, USA

Hi All,

Isn’t it awesome when work gives you comp-time?  Thanks to that, the
Missouri State Route collection was updated earlier at the Worldwide Highway
Library (a Calrog.com component).  Photographed are four state routes, two
of which come from the state’s southern boot:

New York Auto Insurance: Are Prices Climbing?

It’s no secret that New York auto insurance premiums are at an all
time high. Amid a surge in drunk driving (DUI) incidents nationwide as
well as a rise in claims due to an increasing number of natural
disasters, insurance companies are left with no choice, but to raise
rates. This has left a lot of driver wondering how they are going to
fork up the required money for monthly liability. We here at Point and
Click Insurance have complied a few money saving tips that can have
you saving some money on your New York Auto Insurance.

General Liability Minimums

Don’t get caught in New York without auto insurance or you could be in
some serious trouble. New York law states that any car registered in
NY must have liability coverage from a carrier licensed to do business
in the state. The current minimum coverage in New York state is set at
$25,000 for injury, $50,000 for death, and $10,000 for property
damaged caused by any single accident.

If you don’t have acceptable coverage then you will face the loss of
license as well as some rather hefty fines. See the New York
Department of Motor Vehicles for more information of the specifics.
However, as long as you own your car outright, you may be eligible to
insure for the minimum possible saving you money on over insured
assets. You will want to speak with your insurance professional.

Riders, Safe Driving Discounts, and Accident Forgiveness

Some insurance companies have become famous for adding one policy
rider after another covering things like roadside assistance, rental
car expenses, and other items. It is important that you review your
policy and know exactly what you are paying for. When asked most
people had no idea if their insurance company covered a rental car, or
road side assistance, but make no mistake, they were paying for it.

One rider that has become popular is the accident forgiveness rider.
This rider costs a significant amount of money, but will allow you to
get into one accident per period (usually 3-5years) without the
insurance company raising rates. The catch is that the accident has to
be under a certain value in damages which of course is slanted in the
insurance company’s favor. Lastly, out of pure logic, why would you
buy insurance gambling on the fact that you are going to need it? It
doesn’t make sense. If you are that convinced you are going to get
into an accident, spend the money on driving school and you won’t get
hurt.

Everyone has to get a cut…. it's about the revenue

Washington county, Virginia sheriff’s office keeps 80% of the revenue
from traffic tickets where that revenue goes into a revenue sharing of
sorts with the officers writing the tickets.

This has to be the most open-in-the-open roadside theft I’ve heard of.
Sure, the old ohio speed trap towns had this beat when the local
government was all-in-the-family but that existed as typical hidden from
public view corruption, what makes this special is that it is right out
in the open.

<…>
After the Washington County, Virginia Board of Supervisors voted in 2004
to allow the county sheriff’s office to keep 80 percent of revenue
generated from traffic tickets, the number of speeding citations written
has skyrocketed. The revenue splitting arrangement allows the sheriff to
direct revenue windfall toward overtime pay for deputies as well as a
"salary supplement" of $2400 for those who perform well.

In 2004, just prior to the new policy, the sheriff’s office wrote 1602
traffic tickets. The following year, the sheriff’s office wrote 10,018
tickets. Most of the tickets were issued to motorists traveling on
Interstate 81 with the average charge being 79 MPH — just under the
threshold for reckless driving under state law, a charge requiring
significant court time and effort to prosecute.

Newman said. "I feel like it.s basically a user fee. If you don.t speed,
you don.t pay a fine."

And then there was I-265 (IN)!

Hi All,

The Worldwide Highway Library, a Calrog.com component, now hosts a video of
Interstate 265!  The documentary covers the Indiana constituent, which
begins an eastbound crawl from I-64, and currently terminates near
Jeffersonville @ I-65.  The route will ultimately annex IN-265 and cross
into eastern Louisville, KY via a yet-to-be constructed Ohio River crossing.

From there, the truly "interstate" I-265 would join  ’I-265 Kentucky’ and,
by yet another annexation, render a fatal blow to KY-841′s existence.  Net
result:  I-265 will one day become a single beltway around the
metro-Louisville area.

There are two ways to see this latest video:

(1)  Analog hyperlink:  http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/i-265.wmv
(2)  Modern-age RSS feed:  http://worldwide-hwys.calrog.com/vwwh-rss.xml .
Once you’ve subscribed, you’ll automatically be notified of new videos at to
the Library before anyone else.

Enjoy!
