Feds urge cell-phone ban for teen drivers

Shoot – another of our rights being taken away.  When will the feds
realize that killing people with your car doesn’t count.  It’s just an
accident.

Traffic safety experts say cell phones and teens are becoming an
increasingly dangerous combination on the highway, and now the
National Transportation Safety Board is urging states to ban cell
phone use by drivers younger than 18.

"We know that when you’re learning a skill, you should not be
distracted while you are doing it," said Mark Rosenker, acting
chairman of the safety board. "Anything that takes away from the total
focus of learning how to drive is a distraction."

Cells phones — which have been banned in cars in some states because
they distract the driver — are popular with Washoe County teens. A
Reno Gazette-Journal survey conducted five months ago found that more
than 90 percent of the 400 teen drivers interviewed said they have
driven while talking on one. Females do it more frequently than males,
the survey found.

Eleven states and the District of Columbia have put limits on teens
using cell phones while they drive. At least 11 other states have
considered such laws, including Michigan, which is poised to ban
cell-phone use by drivers younger than 18.

And phones are just one of the distractions Washoe teens say they deal
with while driving. Many admitted they regularly chat with passengers
in the back seat, adjust the car stereo or program their iPod digital
music devices while negotiating Northern Nevada roads.

OT: What do you do when you hear gunshots outside your house?

I slept at my girlfriends place last night (on Indy’s ghetto-ised
West side). Around 3 am, I was waken by a fast succesion of 6-7
lagrge caliber (45?) gunshots. I considered calling the
cops, but what would have been the point? It’s that kind of
neighborhood.

This is what being an LLB gets you…

…dead.

I’m not not justifying the actions of the doctor by any stretch of the
imagination (I hope they hang him from the Dames Point Bridge) , but if
the girl had simply KEPT RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS and had not been LLB’ing,
this would have not happened.

Geezer Lets 7 Yr Old Drive

The funniest part isn’t that the 88 year old geezer let a 7 year old girl
drive.

No, its the look you can picture on the face of the Highway Patrol officer
who pulled the kid over for doing 74 in a 55.

Makes you wonder, though, how she managed to reach the pedals.

ALDEN, Kan. – An elderly man accused of allowing a 7-year-old girl to drive
his pickup has been charged in a two-count complaint.

Alan Sleeper, 88, was charged Nov. 16 with endangering a child and allowing
an unauthorized minor to operate a motor vehicle.

Police say Sleeper was in the passenger seat when a Kansas Highway Patrol
trooper pulled the girl over in late August driving the man’s truck in a
rural area at 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Sleeper reportedly told the trooper he "didn’t want her to drive that fast."

Winter tires: good in rain?

I live in Indiana, and we do get snow and ice here. I can get
snow tires (Blizzaks) if necessary, but I’d prefer to get
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (ultra high performance all seasons) if they perform
acceptably in snow. The Pilot reviews on tirerack.com are great, but are mostly
from people living in California or Florida or places like that, and the few reviewers
from the snowbelt are not very enthusiastic about them.
Anyone here ran Pilot Sports in snow?

Also, if I get Blizzaks, would they grip well in rain?

Thanks …

Renting 300C, Magnum or Charger

How do I rent a 300C, Magnum or Charger? Want to test drive… and,
yes, I know, fleet vehicles are anemically powered, but it’s the rest
of the vehicle I’m interested in.

Want to know which agencies rent them, and how to maximize my chances
of getting one of those three instead of a substitute.

Thank you kindly.
