Toyota – haggling

I have my eye on a 2006 Toyota Matrix. Does anyone have any knowledge on how
fixed Toyota is on their price quotes? In other words, do they "bargain?"

$3.20 a gallon in L.A.

I almost feel sorry for those drivers of those bigass SUVs. Notice I
said almost.

A fearless cyclist

Last night I was on the East side on Indy, on US40/Washington street, around 10 pm.
It was dark, and that is a very rundown area of Indy  with few street lights.
I suddenly came upon a Black dude nonchalantly riding a crappy mountain bike
without any lights in the  middle of the right lane.  He was very slow, waving, not going
in a straight, and after I passed him,  I realized that he was riding without hands
and that he was drinking from a big bottle! Amazing. Somehow, I’m sure that this guy has a
better chance of surviving traffic than many of the cyclists equipped with lycra suits,
helmets, and lights… Anyone would slow down for such a clown, and give him lots of space, which
is the opposite of what many drivers do when they come behind a properly equipped cyclist who
rides obeying all rules.

Sometimes I love LLBs!

I love it when a cop car travelling in the left lane
at 20-30 mph over the speed limit is suddenly blocked by
a scared shitless LLB who, no matter how aggressively
tailgated by the cop, will keep matching legal speed with
vehicles in the right lane, trapping the pig behind :)

Those who recall the negro riots in the 1960′s were not surprised by
the New Orleans chaos.Same DNA.

OT?: mechanic leaves ball joint bolt lose, & non-crimped wheel nut

Hi,

Three weeks ago, we had our 1997 Mazda 626′s right axle & CV boot replaced
at a garage with a good rep. There have since been some clunking noises on
turns, and the steering wheel shook at 60 mph+. I live in Nova Scotia,
Canada.

On Friday we had a front break job done at another place, pads, rotors, etc.
I stayed in the bay and the mechanic showed me several things, before he
began any work.

- The ball joint on the right was loose since the nut and bolt securing the
joint was loose and stripped. He replaced it with a hardened bolt/nut, then
took me for a test drive right then. The clunking was gone.

- He then found that the new wheel nut hadn’t been crimped (where a cotter
pin was used in older cars).
He said mechanics are only human, make mistakes, and didn’t bad mouth the
other place

I took the nut & bolt to the garage who’d done the axle, said I was upset,
that we could have been killed if the ball joint had come off, and I now
didn’t trust his work. He apologized, then asked what I wanted him to do. I
asked what he would do. He didn’t answer, or offer anything. He bad mouthed
the other garage.

The danger of a ball joint falling off was so scary that at the time a full
or even partial money refund didn’t seem appropriate.

What do people think? I know this happens, even surgeons make errors which
can kill.
Is it reasonable to go back, say I’ve been thinking, and ask for a refund?
Full? For labor only?

Thanks.

today's cop rant (PG county, MD)

so today I had to drive home from Tyson’s Corner during rush hour (a
peeve in many ways… I hate malls, for one, and I knew that traffic
would suck) anyway it was worse than I expected, I was already
committed
to taking the inner loop of the beltway when I heard on the radio that
there was a truck fire about 10 miles ahead of me, and everything
ground
to a halt.  To make a long story short, I took off "cross country" and
eventually (literally hours later) ended up on MLK just outside the
beltway.

I saw a PG county cop a) speeding (understandable) b) changing lanes
without signaling (no excuse IMHO) c) ignoring a driver with their
brights on after dark (no excuse there either, and one of my pet
peeves)
d) ignoring a driver with no lights on at all (I can understand this
one, I barely saw the a-hole myself) e) IGNORING THE MOTORCYCLIST
PULLING A WHEELSTAND RIGHT BEHIND HIM. (?????)  I was puzzled by this
until I pulled up next to him at a stop light, and added two more to
the
list – smoking one of those cheapass cigars in a plastic holder that
seem to be fashionable among the ghetto set, and TALKING ON A HANDHELD
CELL PHONE.

If anyone has any doubt in their mind why people have no respect for
and
make disparaging comments about law enforcement officers, I hope that
this cleared things up.

Great idea.  The the deadly and criminal speeders have to stay behind
instead of doing their usual 100 mph and posing a deadly menace to
everyone else.

Rough idle & Gasoline smell

Engine V6, multi port fuel injected

-gasoline stinks really bad when idling
-when idling, runs a little rough but not too much, just a bit more than
it used to
-lost some power, kicks down gear and labours hard getting up a hill.
Before it was climbing the same hill like nothing on highest (3rd) gear.

-when accelerating it makes a noise like one cyl does not fire and the
whole car shakes a bit
-driving around city, looks like it uses a lot more fuel than before
-looks like highway fuel use is the same as before

-Spark plugs all are like they should be, nice light beige. No signs of
any carbon deposits.
-Oxygen sensor brand new.
-I could not find any disconected wires or tubings.

With my limited knowledge I have no idea what might be wrong and have no
more clues what to check.
I will greatly appreciate any suggestions, but a new car or a shop is
out of questions.
Thanks.
