Can I turn up for my Ca driving test by myself???

I’m English, and have recently come to the US (two weeks ago) and I
have to take a Californian driving test next week.  I have a valid
British license and have passed the written part so I now have the
drivers permit which if I was a new driver would allow me to take
driving lessons and drive in the presence of a qualified driver over
18.  Now the questions:

1.  Can I still drive legally using my British license (I believe my
    H1 visa means I’m a non-resident, its not a greencard…)

2.  If 1. then does that mean I can turn up at the DMV by myself
without a qualified driver to hold my hand – the drivers handbook
says you must bring "a qualified driver" to the test.

The California drivers handbook is a bit vague – it seems to imply if
you’re a resident you need to get a California drivers licence once
you’ve been here more than 10 days (which I have). But does that mean
my home license ceases to be valid??? I’m not even sure if I am
technically a resident so the 10 day rule may not apply, if so I’m
okay.  Also I couldn’t even apply for the test until I had my social
security number which took more than 10 days to get…

Has someone from another country been through a similar experience
recently and if so did they turn up for their driving test alone ???
And was it okay or were they a) turned in to the police for driving
without a license, or b) sent home again…

All help, advice, information (especially solid facts) greatfully
received.

NY emissions ?

Is there an emission requirement for cars in New York state, similar to
California ?
If so, will a California-compliant car pass the NY test ?

Speed limit in Belgium goes up

Belgiums federal transport minister Di Rupo plans to
increase the max. speed on all motorways from 120 to 130 km/h.
When the roads are wet, only 110 will be allowed.
He also wants to lower the max. speed in busy city centres
from 50 to 30 km/h. On bypasses the max. speed would be
90 km/h (or 80 under certain circumstances), now it
varies between 100 and 120 km/h.

ADVICE NEEDED ON SPEEDING TICKET!

I need advice on a speeding ticket that I recently got in New Jersey.

The state trooper clocked me going at 72 mph on his radar on I-78.
I-78 is a three lane superhighway with a speed limit of 55mph.
It was a clear sunny day on a Monday morning with hardly any traffic on the
road when he stopped me.  When he stopped me there was no other car around me
except a brown van which I was following at the same pace.
The trooper pulled both of us over and gave both of us tickets.  He said
clocked us at 72 mph when we passed him.  I saw him pulling out of the bushes
just as I passed him.

I was also wondering since, I have a Pennsylvania license will New Jersey
report the violation to the state or my insurance company.

Thanks in advance.

No "flying" speed checking in Belgium

The Belgian police announced today that it will stop an experiment
to check the speed of motorists using on-board radar equipment in
police vehicles. The official reason they gave was that it is
"not efficient". It’s against the law in Belgium for the police
to measure the speed of other motorists by using their standard
car tachometer.

So only stationary radar equipment along the road can be used now.
Those speed traps are always visible (but when you spot them, it’s too
late usually). Oncoming motorists usually warn the others
(by flashing their head lights) that a speed trap is ahead.
Soon a law will be passed by the parliament that will allow "unmanned"
radar equipment. There are already a few hundred cameras installed (at fixed
positions, also near traffic lights), and the police systematically sends
the names of offenders to the public prosecutors. But the latter refuse to
prosecute, since it’s the law doesn’t explicitely allow unmanned camera pictures
as proof. It’s not forbidden either, but the motorists have the advantage of
"doubt" in these matters.

Two weeks ago a car drove 170 in a 50 zone. He got caught, and
his driver’s licence was suspended for two weeks. He also had to
pay a fine of several 100′s of dollars (I don’t know how much exactly).
Now I think that’s a pretty light punishment compared to US standards, isn’t it?

Is the a Corvette mailing list

I’m the new owner of an ’87 Corvette convertible.  I haven’t seen
a lot of discussion on corvettes on the net, so I was wondering if
there is a mailing list specifically for corvette enthusiasts.
If you know of one, please send me e-mail.

Thanks

Tire recommendations for a '89 Accord

I need to replace the tires for my Honda Accord (1989, LX model).  I
would like
to get some recommedations from the net as to which is the best tire
I can get for this car.  Any comments on:
    1) Goodyear Aquatread
    2) Bridgstone Turanza  (these two were rated high by consumer report
                                                                                                                                                                        for whatever it is worth!)
          3) Any Michelins?  (I have XH4-s in my other car and they are real bad)
    4) –your favourite tire–

Any and all help from the net appreciated.

Importing a car into the US?

I was wondering what is involved in importing a pre-emissions car into the
United States from Great Britain?  I recently purchased a Mini and would
like to bring it back home with me.  I know other people have brought these
back, as there are several clubs that deal with this car exclusively.

Also, is right-hand drive merely an inconvenience, or will it raise my
insurance (as left hand drive did in GB), or hinder my bringing it into
the US?

Thanks in advance for any help you may offer.
