Clutch Wear…how to tell.

How can I tell when my clutch starts to wear out and I need to get it
replaced? What are some signs that I should look for? Thanks in advance.

First ride in city

I`ve been posting a few articles here for a while now on subjects from
asking about good commuting machines to city riding. I thought I`d relate
about my first experience about riding in city traffic.

After starting 2 year old RD350R I filled her up then headed for the
A38 carriageway. From driving a cage into work a knew that the traffic was
very light for this time of the morning and didn`t really have the need to
do any lane splitting at all at the approach to the islands. The bike
seemed to cruise more than adequately at 70mph with room for acceleration.

My first bit of lane splitting I did was on the approach to Tyburn island
in Birmingham. This is a 4 lane island with fast flowing traffic and a
potential death trap. I gunned my engine hard here to get on the island
ahead of the main traffic. The next potential obstacle is the Aston
Expressway and the Queensway tunnels but luckily the traffic was relatively
free here (unusual this). The journey took about 15-20 minutes less than in
a cage.
I think I`m going to have a bit more of a challenge tommorrow during the
rail strike, well we`ll see……

Oh, btw does anyone have any tips on bike security? I`ve currently got
a hefty chain through the back wheel, a front disc lock and of course
the steering lock.

Strange attitude prevalent in this group

Within this group there seems a prevalent attitude that you need a large, powerful car
to travel far or fast.

I wish I had saved some of the articles to quote but the attitude is mostly to be found
in people from the U.S.A. who seem to be of the opinion that 80 mph is a speed which
only ‘fast’ cars can travel at. And also that you cannot merge into a motorway easily
without a huge run up in a slower car.

I own a 1.2L Lada Riva, and even when carrying 4 other people and towing a trailer tent,
I have no trouble merging onto Motorways. Also this combination would still quite
happily do 80mph (not that I would travel at 80mph whilst towing).

I think this misconception is due to the typical large engined, low revving automatic
cars prevealent in the U.S.A. which make people over there somewhat wary of pushing
cars harder in lower gears. (as is commonplace in England).

I have yet to come accross a car incapable of cruising at 70mph safely and there are
only a few that won’t cruise at 80mph (Minis!).

Misuse of Automatic Transmission ?

Hi,
Driving an automatic is no doubt easier than driving a stick shift and therefore can be said to be less susceptible to misuse. However one does see certaain
cars with bad A/T’s even though the mileage is not very high. Assuming that the
maintenance schedules have been adhered to, I think  it only leaves out driving habits as a possible cause.  I have a few questions which are perhaps
interrelated.

1.Can someone please inform me of ways to avoid putting undue strain on one’s
A/T and prolonging its life. (ie besides driving it very hard or flooring the
gas pedal everytime, which I think are things to naturally avoid)

2. The Tachometer in a car with a stick shift does help in making proper
decisions regarding shifting etc — what are the corresponding things one would do with an automatic? (varying accelerator pressure etc?)

3. What if you are unlucky enough not to have a tachometer at all?

Assume that its a car with a standard P R N D 1 2  transmission

Thanks for all the help in advance. I sincerely hope this is not a subject
which has been covered in a FAQ or a previous thread.

getting insects out of upper brake light

On many of the newer cars, there is an upper brake light located inside
the rear window, often right up against the glass, but sometimes not
*quite* against the glass, so that insects, presumably attracted by
the light, tend to accumulate there.

Anybody know of a way to clean them out?

Thanks.

RX-7..Pros and Cons

I’m on the verge of buying a mint ’88 RX-7. Never seen a winter
(Canadian eh?)… a real beautiful car. It has belonged to my brother
who has babied it beyond comparison.
My question is what are the pros and cons of the rotary engine? Any
replies that would help me in my decision are GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks.

4×4 driving

When driving in rain, which mode is better for stopping the vehicle?

2×4 mode with 4 wheel anti-lock, or 2 rear wheel anti-lock.

4×4 mode (I think anti-lock is not possible in 4×4 mode?)

thanks
