New Tires —Replacement for my Bridgestone RE-71s

I am pulling my car out of storage.  My tires are balder than Michael
Jordan.  Although these bald tires provide excellent grip in the dry, I
skate like Tonya Harding in the rain (i.e. rather badly!).

The RE-71 was one of the best tire for wet/dry.  I want to keep the
excellent wet/dry combo.  The RE-71 is outdated.

I was wondering if anyone can email or post recommendations for the
replacement of the RE-71.  The tires should be as good as the RE-71 in
the wet and preferrably even or better in the dry.

The models I have considered so far…are the Bridgestone RE-92, Pirelli
P-Zeros, Dunlop Sport 9000s(?).

Any input would be appreciated!!!!!

Prices on Explorers and Grand Cherokees

I am thinking of either buying a Cherokee or Explorer in the near
future, and lately have been reading newspaper articles talking about
the low inventory levels of Explorers and Grand Cherokees.

For those of you who have negotiated on a new Sport Ut lately, how much
flexibility have the dealers been willing to show?  Are they expecting
to get sticker on these vehicles, or are they willing to drop their
price a bit?

I don’t care too much about the specific price you paid, just roughly
how much less than sticker you paid, and what area the dealer is in.

If there is sufficient response, I will post a summary.

Right-Hand Drive Autos?

I am hoping to buy a right-hand drive car, or small pick-up truck, to take
to Trinidad, in the Caribbean. Does anybody have any information that
would aid me in my quest? The difficulties? The problems? Any help at all
would be greatly appreciated.

At the moment I am hoping to get a used car, since I haven’t really got
the type of money it takes to get a new car custom built in Detroit. It
would be helpful if the vehicle could be obtained on the East Coast, but
it is by no means a requirement.

I am looking for a right-hand drive since I know I could bring in my current
left-hand drive car but the hassles of the special permits are discouraging.

Please E-mail me any suggestions or advice.

TOP TEN SPEEDING list

TOP TEN SPEEDING EXCUSES
answered to the tune of "How fast do you think you were going?"
or the more popular "your license, please . . ."

(some serious, and others I woudn’t live to tell about if I tried!)

1)      I was trying to see if I had water in my gas tank.
2)      My car won’t go that fast.
3)      It was the pickup truck next to me.
4)      My accelerator stuck.
5)      I thought I was reading my tach.
6)      Must have been that airplane up there.
7)      Pigs need to bring home the bacon too, huh?
8)      Honest!  I was doing 35, and I’ll testify to that in court!
9)      Fast enough for your daughter last night!
10)     just see how fast he’ll go to catch ‘ya

Actually, I’m not.  I’m right here in blustery, winter-y Denver, Colorado.  I
will keep this short to minimize the monotony, but my 65 Valiant and 62 Dodge
have been MUCH better winter/slippery/snowy/treacherous road cars than our 90
VW Jetta.  All three cars have studded snow tires all around.  My father did
a 180 in the VW on a stretch of slippery road when he gradually changed
lanes.  42nately, there was little traffic.  The VW and other FWD cars we’ve
owned/driven have all been squirrely and unpredictable on our winter roads.
The VW is poorly designed–there is no weight over the rear wheels and they
will come around on you so damn fast it will make your head (and car) spin.
We’ve had to add 250 pounds’ worth of Concrete mix to make the car SAFE for
the streets, with the resultant loss in temperate weather handling and fuel
economy.  The Valiant and the Dodge are nicely designed, with about 50 per
cent of the weight on the front and the other 50 per cent on the rear.
Driven sensibly, they are predictable, tractable, sure-footed and stable.
Both have 9 inch drums all around :Ñ0
but that’s actually irrelevant to this discussion.  My point is that the
superiority of FWD on bad roads is GROSSLY inflated by the media and
carmakers.  Properly equipped and driven, a well-designed RWD car is a good
snow car.

BTW–none of the 3 above mentioned cars has a sure-grip (posi) differential.)

Dan.

question about driving with a cold engine

Folks,
I am having a debate with one of my friends on whether one should
drive off with a cold engine, or give it enough time to warm up, and
then drive… he sez warm it up only enough till the car starts moving,
and then drive. I think it should make more sense to let the engine warm
up quite a bit… so, which one is right/good for the car? and why?

thanks!

Re: Shifting an automatic MANUALLY??

Hey Man!

I got almost the same problem You got.  I got an ’81 chevy MALIBU.
It shifts fine, until it gets to about 25 mph.  now under normal acceleration,
it would shift to third gear and start to shake.  It shifts too early, so I
have to shift it manually.  I think it moves a whole lot nicer manual ;I can
hit about 45-50 and still be in second gear.  I wanted to know if this messes
up the transmission.  but for now I’ll be shifting manually and hitting the
high RPM’s!

My malibu got 6 doors, some air shocks, and I’m
going to put in a NOS system pretty soon, so I’ll be a flyin in my Malibu
SPORTS WAGON!

Thank you.
