4 wheel drift

This has been bugging me for a while:

On normal, not bumpy, dry pavement, what exactly is 4 wheel drift,
how do you induce it on a front wheel drive car?

Only thing I can think of is to go mach 5 into a hairpin turn, and then
jack the wheel as fast as you can in one direction, but then, wouldn’t
that just cause understeer, albeit, LOTS of it?

SF -> Yosemite?

I am going to be in San Fransisco for the first time later this week,
and am interested in going to Yosemite NP.  The map shows it to be about 200
miles, but how long does it take to get there?  Are they 200 quick miles, or
200 miles of small towns?

I’ve only got one day to do Yosemite (I wish I had much more), so I’ll
be driving out in the morning and driving back that night.

     Thanks in advance.

Tires for Stealth ES

I’ve got a ’91 Dodge Stealth ES (no turbo, 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steering, or
ABS) that need new tires.  I’m not overly impressed with the factory tires –
Goodyear Eagle VR55 (225/55R16).  They only last about 30,000 miles, are lousy on
wet pavement, and are ridiculous on snow.  They handle well on dry pavement
(though they do wander some on rough pavement).  My driving is almost exclusively
freeway or back country winding roads, where you can go pretty fast…
Anyway, any recommendations out there?
  Thanks for the help!

Mass ticket on Illinois license

        Posted for a friend …

Anyone know if the points get transferred for a Massachusetts
speeding ticket to an Illinois license?  The car had Massachusets
        plates!

        Thanks.

New Car Road Tests

I am sorry to be posting this in the wrong newsgroup.  My family is looking
for a new automobile and I was wondering if there are any newsgroups dedicated
to Road Test information and providing discussion or data on Owner
Satisfaction etc.  If you can help me please forward a private message to my
e-mail address.

Again sorry. And thanks in advance!

Departmental Hearing: What is it ??

Hi folks: my friend has a problem.  He has 2 points left out of the initial
5 points he got for a speeding ticket which he got 2 yrs back.  He got
another 5 points (generous guy :) for another speeding ticket, totally to 7
points.

He has to take the Safe Driving Exam Test.  He has also been asked to come
for the Departmental Hearing.

The question is, just what is this Deparmental Hearing thing ??

My friend will surely be very glad for any help you folks could offer.

need purchasing info

a friend of mine would like to buy an aerodynamic, front-wheel-driven,
flying sports workbench — sorry, I mean, uh, a Volvo 850… (beats me
why!!!).

I must admit the 5-cylinder 168 HP engine with the knock sensor
did impress me — not bad for a workbench….

Anyway, my opinions to myself, I’d still like to help them, so I’ll appreciate
any help I can get on:

1) How much get they expect to bargain it down?  They want 5speed with
leather interior, with as little else as possible.

2)  Any known problems, show-stoppers, etc. about the 850.

3) At least one good reason why they are still called cars, rather than
tractors or workbenches (O.K., so what do you expect to hear from a die-hard
   VW owner???)

Anyway, I promise to keep my personal taste away from this and pass the reponses
on as I receive them…

                                Thanks in advance,

downshifting probs.

okay, i own a 1986 1/2 chevrolet corvette with the standard L98 350 block.
the transmission, alas, is an automatic.  the problem is that at high speeds
(and their corresponding WOT conditions) the tranny keeps shifting out of
OD and into 3rd, over-revving the engine and losing power.  i figured this
is because of the lack of intake manifold vacuum… of course i could be wrong.
what the real question is is this: can i fix this?  am i forever condemned
to driving a car whose top speed cannot be found?  tell me it aint so…

** Nissan Pathfinder Questions **

Hi Folks,

I’m interested in buy a NEW Nissan Pathfinder (see
earlier post titled "** SUVs/Pathfinder **").

- Any good/bad experiences from owners?
– Anything to watch out for (ie bad parts, handling, etc)?
– Any idea if and when Nissan is planning to redesign it?
– Any options that are a "must" (ABS, etc)?
– Is the 2 door model significantly different from the 4
door?  If the space is about the same, I may
consider buying a 2 door (if it’s alot cheaper).

Something to keep in mind:  This is our first new car/SUV and
we’ll use it mostly for transportation to work and
weekend camping trips, etc (not alot of off-road).  I live in
the bay area (near San Francisco for non-Californians),
Her parents are in Canada (Calgary), so we may drive up
once a year or so to see them – probably won’t need 4WD
if we go in summer.  My parents are in L.A. and we’ll
probably visit them once or twice a year as well.
Is this SUV suitable for this kind of use?

I’ve looked at other SUV’s (Isuzu, Toyota, Ford, Jeep,
etc) and I liked this one the best so far.

Please email to me directly and I will post a reply if
there is enough interest.

Thanx in advance,

Reet
