Holiday Fee Grab Alert: Atlanta area

Monday, November 30th, 2009

This is a reminder to anyone traveling I-75 north of Atlanta to
beware while in Cobb county/Marietta.  The Cobb County fee grabbing
brigade plans another all-out effort.  This brigade typically
writes in the neighborhood of 14,000 tickets from this  ~15 mile stretch
of road over a holiday period.  The fines are steep and if you plan on
contesting it, the courts in Cobb county are set up so TWO appearances
at minimum are necessary.

The affected area is I-75 from the I-285 (perimeter) interchange to the
south to where the speed limit resumes 65 to the north (about 15 miles).
Favorite places for the pigs to sit include a dip in the road between
bridges at exit 114, against the barrier wall in the steep curve
between 113 and 114, between I-285 and the Lockheed exit (112 I think)
and just before the 65 mph speed limit sign to the north.

The pigs almost always root from the left lane.  They are quite fond of
fabricating offences, particularly against out-of-state tags.  They
drive a range of vehicles but Chevy Orcas (caprices), Jeep Cherokees and
other SUVs, motorcycles and one full sized van are the most common.
Most are poorly marked.  Aside from sitting and rooting, another favorite
tactic is to cruise at about 65 mph (prevailing speed) and grab any
car they observe acting different from the rest, particularly if
that car is gaining or pulling away from the pigmobile.  Cobb has two
laser radars and use them in great ticket sweeps.  Typically
one pig will fire from the downstream side of overhead bridges catching
the victim in the rear (rear entry?) while a whole sty of piggies sits
down the road in a feeding frenzy.  Therefore watch those overpasses.

The bars must close at 2:00 am so that is a particularly hazardous
time to be on the road not only from the drunks but also from
the pigs who covy in a feeding frenzy.

If you can avoid Cobb County, please do so.  If you must drive through
Cobb County, please be careful and spend as little money while in
the county as possible.  If you must stop for gas or food, please
let the proprietor know you make every attempt to avoid the county
because of the fee grabbing activities.  And if you change your plans
and do avoid Cobb County, please drop me a note and let me know.
I print ‘em all out, bundle ‘em up and mail them to the county commission
chairman.  I may start sending them to the local paper too.
From my 4th of July alert I got over 30 pieces of mail.  Significant bux
represented there.

BTW, both Six Flags Over Georgia and The Whitewater water park are in
Cobb county.  Avoid these if you can.

bicyclists

Monday, November 30th, 2009

i saw some major injustice being enacted here, so i HAD to act.

do NOT ride your bicycle opposing the flow of traffic.  ever.  there is
not one, single solitary positive point about this.  as one who has ridden
bikes on many long trips, across many states, and logging many miles i  think
i can speak with a great deal of experience.  cons- (there arent any pros)
a) you increase the velocity of a head on collision by a considerable ammount.
b) roads are designed for traffic going ONE way.  where are your red lights
if youre going the wrong way?  your stop signs?  as a bicyclist you ARE a
vehicle and you must abide by the laws, if not only to prevent YOU from
great bodily harm.  tell me this: how are you to make a right hand turn?  bzzt.
c) oncoming cyclists scare the hell out of drivers.  a small steering input on
the  handlebars can INSTANTLY throw you into the path of the car.  this doesnt
happen on the other RIGHT side or the road.
d) claims of "seeing the cars" hold ZERO water.  buy a goddamned mirror.
the technology is centuries old.
e) the best way to be seen is to put youself in the right place at the right
time.  cars look for other cars (sadly enough) more than they look for soft
humans.  act like a car, and you will be treated as such.

okay, i guess im done wiht my ranting and raving.  i angers me to no end when
i see uneducated people making grand sweeping FALSE observations like:
ride opposing traffic, its better.
hell, the motorcycles and mopeds and scooters could do the same!  its better!
why not?

asinine.

Court appearance tactics

Monday, November 30th, 2009

My wife was ticketed over three months ago for failing to turn left from
a left turn lane.  She did initially go into the lane, but when she noticed
the sign showing it was a left turn lane she moved back into the through
lane and continued on through the junction.  There was hardly any traffic
around so she did not interfere with any traffic during this maneuver.

She got a ticket along with many others who made the same mistake, although
most of the others did not move out of the lane as quickly as my wife.  (She
was in an unfamiliar area, so she didn’t know that this was a left turn lane.)

I’m going to court with her for support and was wondering about tactics.

I have to assume that the officer can not remember any "details" of when she
entered and exited the turn lane.  If he says he does, I guess I could ask
him that is he remebers these details so well, what was the color of the car,
and how many passengers were in it.

Any comments would be appreciated.  Am I dreaming to think that this will be
fair?  Can I videotape the proceedings?

Isuzu mail group

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Hi:

Does anyone know of a Isuzu mail group that I can subscribe
to via internet.  And does any know where can I obtain the shop
manual (factory) of an Isuzu Impulse without resorting to the dealer.

P.S.  I’ve just bought the car, does anybody have knowledge of part
availibility of the 88 impulse turbo.

Daytime running lights. An owner's peeve.

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I’ve been down here in the U.S. for years now, and the place apparently
hasn’t gotten used to me yet.

Please indulge me while I vent my annoyance.  I drive with my headlights on
at all times, as do many other people (around here it seems, inexplicably,
to be mostly fellow Saab owners), for the well-documented safety/visibility
reasons that made it law in Canada.

A lot of people can’t deal with this, unfortunately.  Once a week, some
pedestrian or other driver will practically pee himself, frantically
pointing at the front of my car, bellowing "Yer LIGHTS er on!"  …No shit,
bonehead.  Why the conniption?  Am I blinding you?  I don’t think so.
Whaddya want, a medal?  Piss off.

Now if I’ve parked a car and walked away from it, leaving the lights on, I
could accept this — although frankly, if I’ve bought some bullshit car
that’s not advanced enough to cut the headlamps when the key is removed,
that’s my own tough shit.  But this is not the case.

You know who you are.  It’s called safety, weenie.  Deal with it.

Re: Toll on I90 from Buffalo to Boston

Monday, November 30th, 2009

In article <CCwtKx….@acsu.buffalo.edu> ziniu…@acsu.buffalo.edu (Ziniu "Michael" Wei) writes:

> From Albany, there’s US 2 going to Boston as well.

Certainly not!  US 2 runs through northern New England.  You must
be thinking of NY 2, which joins up with MA 2 at the border (and MA
2 does indeed run down into Boston).

> Is it a good idea to use that road instead of the I-90 in MA?

Only if you’re willing to spend time to save money, since only certain
portions of MA 2 are high-speed freeway.  One benefit of the MA pike
(I-90) is that its speed limit is 65 mph through most of western
and central MA.

Time limit on IN tollway

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Hi,

In the ticket for the Indiana Toll Way there is a notice saying that if the
ticket is lost or more than 12 hours old, the maximum fare will be collected
(and I think from the further end of the tollway.)

Can someone explain why there is a time limit?

Thanks.

Attorney for a speeding ticket

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Folks,
I was unfortunate enough to get two speeding tickets last week. One of them
was at a speed trap on San Antonio road. The other one was on Highway 101
and the cop gave me a ticket even though he did not follow me for 1/2 a mile.
I am planning to get an attorney for atleast one of them. I know about the
"Nolo press" book and  will use that if the attorney is too expensive.I wanted
recommendations for attorneys who take on these kind of cases and if possible
the amount they charge for their services.

I remember hearing (on the Net) about an attorney in San Francisco who deals
exclusively with these kind of cases and is quite good. Could you please
email your responses to me and if there is a demand I will post a summary
about the info I collected.

Thanks a lot

Need Help. Back window shattered on its own

Monday, November 30th, 2009

I need some help with a problem that I have had with my car.

I have a 2 month old Nissan Altima.  This afternoon at about
3:30 in the Los Angeles area, my girlfriend was getting into
the car.  After closing the door, she heard a loud pop and looked
in the rear view mirror.  The back windshield had shattered
a little left of the center.  (In other words, it broke into tiny
pieces the way that side and back glass does).
The area at this time was about 1 foot in diameter.

The car was parked in our driveway which is in a good neighborhood
and off of the street so it is almost impossible that a rock or
something hit the window at that time.

The first question is:

        How did this happen?

Here are a couple of plausible explanations that I have considered:

  1)    Something hit the window a few hours earlier and
        caused a crack that was
not visible to the eye.  Then after sitting in the
heat the window shattered after she shut the door.

I have talked to one window person who said that
glass like the back windshields ussually either
shatter or they are fine after an impact.

  2)    That either there was a defect in the glass or the
car frame which caused the glass to sit a little bit
out of kilter.  In other words, the glass did not fit perfectly
and was under pressure.  The glass then shattered due
to the heat and the closing of the door.

Any other ideas?

Here is why I was wondering:

I have gone to the dealership and they are claiming that glass will
not break like this.  So hear are some other questions:

   1)   Is there anything that an independent glass dealer
could find if they looked at the car?  The entire
window is now knocked out because we drove
        it to the dealer.

I would rather have the dealer fix it because I feel
that there is a much better chance of getting them
to cover at least what my insurance does not cover if
        they do the repair.

  2)    What are my legal options?  It seems like it would be very hard
to prove that the glass did not break due to an impact.

  3)    Any similar experiences?

I figured that if I kept going up the chain of responsibility at
Nissan that eventually I would get someone who would be willing
to pay for it.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated as soon as possible.

Thanks

Dan Clancy
