As far as I am concerned, first start off with the premise that deer are as
dumb as dirt. I’ve never seen stupider animals. They:
A- eat grass on the VERY edge of the road in the middle of the night, usually
when it is foggy. They simply CAN’T go a bit further (like 6 inches) on the
shoulder and eat that grass…no…that’s too easy!
B- Look at your headlights and don’t move at all as you approach. You can
flash, turn them off, or even pretend to be a police car and alternate your
brights, but they won’t care. (Although they may follow you around for donut
handouts/leftovers, etc!)
C- If you honk at them, they get frightened, but of course they don’t run AWAY
from the moving vehicle which is flashing and swirving to escape hitting
them…NOOOO…they run RIGHT into you!
So although they may be cute, don’t expect them to come up to you and discuss
Plato or Hobbes in the near future.
With this being said, I have found that deer whistles make them freeze earlier,
and pay attention to you somewhat earlier. Before I put whistles on, I tended
to totally startle them, now, they seem to be looking for me before my lights
hit them. So they become alert sooner, and usually this allows me to honk a few
times and they start to scatter. It also allows me to have a bit more time to
avoid them if they scatter in the path of my car.
I drive a lot in Westchester, around North Salem on NY-121, 124, 22, NY/CT-35,
and of course the Meritt/Hutchinson River Parkway. Tons of deer, all year
round. I’ve come VERY close to hitting a few prior to installation of the
whistles; now I seem to avoid them with a greater margin safety, ie, more time
to react. And *I* have not been driving slower, I can assure you!
Overall, while they may not always help or be 100% effective, they do, at least
in my case, appear to alleviate the closest calls, thus saving my car some
damage and (hopefully) saving the deer its life. I would advise spending the
$5 or so and getting a pair.
(BTW: to those people who will flame me for making fun of how stupid deer are,
well, get a life. I think you have better things to do than defend the
intelligence of deer. If you can’t find ANYTHING better to do, however, feel
free to come to Westchester County, NY, and tell them yourself to move. No
doubt they will be *much* more responsive to what YOU tell them, being as you
are much closer to their 3-nueral-firings per minute brains than I am…:/ )
